The god shovel: the full maxed-out set
A god shovel in Minecraft is just four enchantments: Efficiency V, Unbreaking III, Mending, and either Fortune III or Silk Touch. There is no fifth useful slot - shovels have no combat enchantments, so the maxed set is genuinely the whole pool. Because it is only four books (three shared with every other tool, plus one drops enchantment), the optimal anvil order almost never runs into the 39-level cap: merge the books with each other first, then apply the combined book to a fresh shovel in a single pass, and the whole build usually stays under 20 levels. Use the calculator above with Shovel pre-selected to get the exact order for your set.
Fastest shovel in Minecraft: what actually matters
- Efficiency V is the entire speed story on a shovel - it instamines dirt, sand, gravel, clay and snow, which is what shovels are for.
- Haste II from a beacon stacks on top of Efficiency V and pushes the shovel to instant-break on almost every block it can mine.
- Unbreaking III and Mending do not change speed - they keep the fast shovel alive, which matters because instamining burns durability roughly three times faster per second.
- No other enchantment adds speed: there is no shovel equivalent of Depth Strider or Soul Speed. Speed comes from Efficiency and beacon Haste only.
Shovel enchantment order: why books go first
The optimal shovel enchantment order is not 'apply the best book first' - it is 'combine the books with each other first'. Every time the shovel touches an anvil its prior work penalty grows (1, 3, 7, 15, 31...), and that penalty is charged on the next merge. Four separate applications to the shovel can cost 30+ levels or even trigger 'Too Expensive!'; merging the four enchantments into one book off-tool (two or three cheap book-on-book merges) and then applying that single book to the shovel keeps the shovel's penalty at 1. The calculator above solves exactly this tree for your enchantment set.
Fortune shovel vs Silk Touch shovel
Fortune III on a shovel is the flint tool: gravel drops flint instead of gravel on almost every block, which is the standard way to mass-produce flint for arrows and fletching tables. Silk Touch is the landscaping tool: it picks up grass blocks, podzol, mycelium and snow layers intact, so you can build with them or relocate terrain without shoveling it into dirt paths. Since the two are mutually exclusive, the endgame move is two shovels - a Fortune III one for gravel farms and a Silk Touch one for building - and both are cheap enough that most players just keep both in the hotbar.
